Hu Tong Doors

A collection of Hutong doors, one of my favorite subjects.
They have so much character and style.  Perhaps before I leave China I will take a pair of doors with me, no doors I have seen in the states match the character and mystique of a nice, red, worn looking door found in a Beijing hutong.

Changsha and Beijing

Below are some photos taken in Changsha, Hunan and in Beijing.  Changsha is the capitol city of Hunan province.  It's a pretty big city but not as interesting as Beijing in some ways.  It does have nice mountains and lakes but the city itself is doesn't have the ancient feeling of Beijing.

bugs and flowers

Here are some photos I took of bugs on my last trip.
We only had about a total of 8 hours over two days to travel around so I had to take what I could get and bugs were definitely on the menu, so to speak.

churches and hu tongs

Below are some photos I took of two churches and two hu tongs in Beijing.  These two areas are quickly becoming my favorite subjects.  Churches because their European architecture is so attractive and in a Chinese setting seems so foreign.  Hu tongs because they are so distinctly Chinese and a taste of the old Beijing culture.  Most of the time I have off I ride my bike around looking for signs that say "such and such hu tong"  They are so distinct and somewhat similar.  The saddest thing is that many of them are disappearing at an alarming rate.  I fear that some of the hu tongs I have pictured here will be gone very soon, actually their destruction has already started as you may notice from some of my photos.
